Celebrating women striving to #BreakTheBias in the legal industry
In 1908, 15,000 daring women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote, and this saw the beginning of what is now commemorated annually as International Women’s Day on March 8. Women spanning across all walks of life come together on a global scale, to acknowledge and celebrate how far they have come in their fight for socio-economic, political, and cultural progress whilst continuing to fight the patriarchy and advance women’s rights.
The oft cited metaphor of the glass ceiling is evidenced even in the legal field, confronted with various barriers which women encounter when seeking to advance their legal careers. According to the 2017 records of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), out of 1,097 admitted as Attorneys-at-law in that particular year, 65% were female. But this does not negate the fact that ultimately, despite a higher number of women entering into the BASL, the numbers are reversed when taking into consideration those who continue to advance their careers in the legal field.
While of the belief that women must be celebrated every day, we at Velox Legal want to join the global movement and take this day as an opportunity to continue to appreciate and honour the fierce women who have challenged the status quo in the legal field. Fascinatingly enough, Velox had not been meant to be a female dominant organisation but hasn’t shied away from the progress they have made to stand out in the legal profession. In addition to being an up and coming local law firm, Velox is well known for establishing its footprint across all continents and encouraging young women to strive for success and achieve new highs in the field of law.
The company has been built on the foundation of two strong spirited partners, Lihini Fernando and Dakshika Perera.
Our team is made up of lawyers and paralegals that have delved into varying fields of law including conveyancing, contract law, immigration law, legal research, legal drafting and other administrative roles, in quite a short span of time and we could not be more proud of the progress the team has collectively made to take the organization to new heights, both locally and internationally.
